Bangalore Meetup on ‘Workforce Diversity’ – June 10, 2017

PanelAll Things Talent organized yet another successful meet-up session on 10th June, 2017 in Bengaluru, which focused on the concept of ‘Diversity in Workforce’.

The event mainly catered to HR Professionals who were interested in obtaining a better understanding of Diversity in the workplace, holding considerable prior experience in Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives.

‘Workforce Diversity’ describes the differences, similarities, and unique features that exist in an organization’s workforce due to the mixture of gender, ethnicity, race, nationality, disabilities, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious beliefs and other such factors.

Like various other aspects of an organization, this too is a double-edged sword, as it comes with both advantages and challenges, which can often be tricky to deal with.

To create more awareness on how to extract the maximum potential from this diversity of workforce, and to minimize the conflicts arising out of it, All Things Talent invited several influential HR hiring and recruitment experts to this meet-up in order to facilitate a discussion wherein HR professionals could gather keen insights on present trends in managing workforce diversity and the initiatives taken by various organizations to create a more engaging and inclusive environment, which takes in to account this diversity.

Mr. Indraneil Roy – General Manager and Head Strategic Hiring at Wipro Technologies Limited, talked about how the shift had taken place from conducting specific events for diversity inclusion such as Women’s Day in the past to more mainstream campaigns and initiatives encompassing the entire workforce irrespective of the gender differences.

Ms. Prerrna P. Kapoor – Lead Diversity and Inclusion Programs at HGS, discussed her experience of working with a specially-abled intern for whom she had to improvise a diversity initiative and how the intern’s interaction with the seniors helped him understand their aspirations and likewise, it was a learning experience for the organization on how to implement a more empathetic and inclusive model to make differently-abled employees feel more secure and empowered at the workplace.

Mr. Jatinder Salwan – Senior Vice President Human Resources at Societe Generale Global Solution Center, traced back to the history of the World Wars in order to locate the point in history where women were first allowed to enter the work sphere, erstwhile dominated by the male race.  He felt this was the first true act of embracing diversity in workforce.

Mr. Anoop Hiwalay – Head of Talent Acquisition – India, Global Banking and Markets SCs, HSBC, shared his views on the common stereotypes which exist in the various strata of our society and why is it necessary to look past these in order to breed a more holistic and inclusive work culture, which celebrates diversity rather than seeing it as a point of conflict.

Ms. Jyothsana Vasudevan – HR Head, Lubricants Supply Chain Asia Pac & Middle East, Royal Dutch Shell, centered her discussion on how her organization had embraced gender differences among workforce and through supporting statistics, also talked about the trends then and now.

The event also comprised of a panel discussion where the esteemed guests presented their views on various questions posed to them on several prominent debates pertaining to the main theme of the session, followed by a Q&A Session with the audience members, which in the given time frame tried to answer as many relevant questions as possible.

The event concluded with the presentation of mementos to all the panellists and proceedings were taken forward to a lunch session towards the end.
