How is AI Reshaping Career Expectations for Gen Z? Industry Leaders Answer

As workplaces evolve, organisations face the challenge of leveraging AI to meet the distinct needs of Gen Z employees. This generation seeks more than just career advancement—they prioritise flexibility, well-being, and meaningful mentorship, all while maintaining a strong sense of purpose. As AI transforms workflows and redefines productivity, it also presents opportunities to enhance employee satisfaction and engagement. Industry leaders weigh in on how AI can strike the delicate balance between efficiency and human connection, catering to Gen Z’s expectations while shaping a future-ready workplace culture.

Mili Panicker, Director of HR & People Operations at WebEngage, emphasises AI’s transformative role in fostering both employee well-being and engagement. She explains, “Organisations can leverage AI to monitor workload trends and prevent burnout, offering managers proactive insights to maintain balance. AI analytics can personalise growth opportunities, enabling continuous development. Additionally, AI-powered mental health tools, like 24/7 chatbots, offer private support when needed. By enabling real-time feedback and flexible scheduling, AI creates a dynamic environment where Gen Z can thrive both personally and professionally.”

Similarly, Kamaljeet Singh, CHRO of The Sleep Company, highlights AI’s capacity to design personalised development plans while ensuring employee well-being remains a top priority. He states, “Organisations can leverage AI to create tailored learning programs, facilitate flexible work arrangements, and provide mental health support. AI-driven mental health apps offer confidential resources, while ethical AI practices ensure technology complements human skills rather than replaces them.”

Neha Kulwal, Managing Director, India and APAC at Mitgo, stresses the importance of tailored skill-building to optimise employee performance in an AI-driven workplace. She notes, “Business leaders must accommodate different generations to maintain the best talent pool. AI-powered training programs can analyse employee performance and offer targeted recommendations for improvement, ensuring relevant and effective skill-building for an AI-driven workplace.”

Smita Shetty Kapoor, CEO & Co-founder of KelpHR, connects AI’s integration with Gen Z’s career priorities, such as flexibility and environmental responsibility. “AI’s growing role in the workplace aligns with Gen Z’s expectations, as they seek flexibility, well-being, and environmental responsibility. By offering training, mentorship, and continuous learning programs focused on AI, companies can provide Gen Z with the tools to thrive. This approach not only improves productivity but also addresses concerns about AI’s impact on job security, enabling reskilling and career adaptability,” she explains.

Gururaja Yellapur, VP & Head of Product Engineering at Omega Healthcare, highlights AI’s proactive role in supporting employee wellness. He shares, “AI technologies can effectively manage workload distribution, monitor engagement, and predict burnout risks, allowing organisations to take proactive measures to enhance employee wellness. For example, AI-driven scheduling tools facilitate customised and flexible work patterns. AI-enabled chatbots provide crucial insights to HR partners by checking in with new employees, identifying potential challenges, and ensuring timely interventions.”

Balancing AI Efficiency with Human Connections and Mentorship

While Gen Z embraces AI for its ability to streamline workflows and optimise productivity, they remain deeply committed to maintaining human connections, mentorship, and teamwork in the workplace. Industry leaders emphasise how Gen Z is balancing AI integration with a focus on relationships and collaboration.

Panicker notes the dual approach Gen Z takes with AI and human interactions. “Gen Z employees view AI as a powerful tool to simplify tasks and increase productivity, but they are equally focused on maintaining authentic human connections. They rely on AI for data-driven insights and repetitive tasks, allowing more time for relationship-building and collaborative projects.”

Singh of The Sleep Company, stresses the significance of mentorship for Gen Z. “Gen Z balances AI usage with human connection through team collaboration and mentorship programs. These initiatives promote strong relationships with experienced colleagues and ensure AI complements rather than replaces human interactions.”

Kulwal explains how Gen Z integrates AI to enhance human creativity. “The success of transformative tools like AI depends on how Gen Z interacts with them. They combine AI’s capabilities with human creativity, ensuring mentorship and human connections remain central to their professional journey.”

Shetty adds that Gen Z actively seeks meaningful mentorship. “They use AI to handle repetitive tasks but prioritise mentorship and collaboration. By actively seeking mentorship and engaging in teamwork, they ensure that AI serves to enrich rather than isolate their workplace experience.”

Divya Dixit, Chief Growth Officer at One Health Assist, highlights how AI enhances productivity without compromising relationships. “By using AI to handle routine tasks, Gen Z frees up time for meaningful interactions, such as team discussions and mentorship sessions. They view AI as a tool to enhance—not replace—human engagement, allowing them to focus on relationship-building and learning from seasoned colleagues.”

Highlighting Gen Z’s understanding of AI’s limits, Yellapur said, “While AI is integral to their work, Gen Z recognises the importance of genuine relationships and mentorship. They utilise AI to boost efficiency but rely on human interactions for nuanced feedback and personal growth. By leveraging AI as a tool for productivity, they foster workplace relationships conducive to continuous learning.”

With AI integration in workplaces, understanding and addressing Gen Z’s expectations of both technology and human connection will be essential. By utilising AI to foster well-being and flexibility while preserving mentorship and collaboration, organisations can create environments where Gen Z employees thrive.
