Unacademy Founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini Step Down to Launch AirLearn

In a significant leadership transition within India’s edtech sector, Unacademy co-founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini have announced their departure from active roles at the company to concentrate on their new venture, AirLearn. This move follows a series of strategic shifts at Unacademy, including a pivot towards offline coaching centres and a reevaluation of its online test preparation model.

Munjal, who served as CEO, is handing over leadership to Sumit Jain, a board member who joined Unacademy in 2020 following the acquisition of his startup, Opentalk. Jain’s experience includes founding the real estate platform Commonfloor, which was acquired by Quikr in 2016.

The decision by Munjal and Saini to exit comes amid internal discussions about Unacademy’s future direction, especially in light of challenges in its online business and a failed acquisition deal. Their new focus, AirLearn, is a language learning app that has already shown promise, achieving an annual recurring revenue of nearly $400,000 in the U.S. within months of its launch.

This transition marks a new chapter for both Unacademy and its founders, as the company continues to adapt to the evolving educational landscape, and Munjal and Saini embark on their latest entrepreneurial endeavour.
