Vanguard Group Inc. has named Salim Ramji, a seasoned executive from BlackRock Inc., as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 8, 2024. Ramji will also join Vanguard’s board of directors, marking a significant departure from tradition as the first outsider to lead the firm since its inception nearly five decades ago by Jack Bogle. He takes over from Tim Buckley, who announced his retirement earlier this year after overseeing a remarkable growth period that saw Vanguard’s assets under management soar by 80% to $9 trillion.
Ramji’s appointment comes at a pivotal juncture for Vanguard, the world’s second-largest asset manager with approximately $9.3 trillion in assets as of March 2024. He is expected to navigate Vanguard through the evolving investment landscape, capitalising on opportunities to advance the firm’s mission of delivering optimal investment outcomes. Ramji underscored his dedication to this mission, stating, “The current investor landscape is evolving, presenting opportunities for Vanguard to enhance its mission of providing individuals with the best prospects for investment success, which is more pertinent today than at any other time in the firm’s five-decade history.”
With over 25 years in the financial services industry, Ramji brings extensive experience from BlackRock, where he played a key role in managing significant assets and driving growth, particularly in iShares and Index Investments. He served on BlackRock’s Global Executive Committee and led its global iShares and Index Investments division, overseeing approximately two-thirds of the firm’s assets.
Prior to his tenure at BlackRock, Ramji was a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led the Asset & Wealth Management Practice, honing his skills in corporate strategy and financial advisory. His diverse background equips him to guide Vanguard through the complexities of global markets and regulatory landscapes.
Vanguard’s board, represented by Lead Independent Director Mark Loughridge, expressed confidence in Ramji’s leadership, expressing anticipation for how his strategic vision and experience will shape the future of one of the world’s largest asset managers. As Ramji assumes his new role, stakeholders are eagerly watching to see how he will steer Vanguard through the challenges and opportunities ahead.
