Tech giant Apple is increasingly turning its focus towards India as it seeks to diversify its manufacturing operations away from China. This strategic shift is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities in the country. According to a recent report by the Economic Times, Apple’s local ecosystem could result in the creation of over 600,000 jobs in India.

The report suggests that by the close of the current financial year, Apple may create approximately 200,000 direct jobs, with women making up more than 70% of this workforce. Furthermore, government projections highlighted in the report indicate that each direct job typically spawns at least three indirect jobs, potentially leading to a total of between 500,000 and 600,000 new employment opportunities.

This expansion coincides with reports of Apple enhancing its manufacturing capabilities in India. Bloomberg News has noted that the company has commenced training programmes for thousands of workers at its factory in Tamil Nadu. The aim is to produce the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max versions as closely aligned with their global release as possible.
Notably, there are indications that, for the first time, Apple plans to assemble its high-end Pro and Pro Max models of the forthcoming iPhone 16 series in India. This production is expected to be carried out by Apple’s partner, Foxconn Technology Group, at their facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
The technology world is eagerly anticipating the launch of the iPhone 16 series. Apple has officially scheduled the event for September 9, under the tagline ‘It’s Glowtime’. Industry analysts are expecting the introduction of four new iPhone 16 models at this event.
Meanwhile, Apple has announced a significant leadership change, with insider Kevan Parekh appointed as its Chief Financial Officer, effective August 26. Parekh succeeds company veteran Luca Maestri, who will step down from the role on January 1, 2025.
This leadership transition comes at a pivotal time for Apple, as it gears up for multiple product launches this autumn. Analysts have labelled this season as heralding the most significant software upgrade for the iPhone, incorporating advanced artificial intelligence features. These enhancements are crucial for Apple as it seeks to revitalise global sales, particularly in China, and to better compete with rivals that have already integrated AI upgrades into their offerings.
An industry executive has stated that out of the 200,000 direct jobs, nearly 90,000 are anticipated to be created by iPhone and component factories operated by Foxconn and Tata Group in Tamil Nadu. The state has become a leader in electronics manufacturing. Recently, a large-scale industrial housing facility, costing ₹706.5 crore, was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin. This complex will accommodate approximately 18,720 workers, predominantly women employed at the Foxconn iPhone factory.
Beyond the housing complex in Sriperumbudur, Apple’s vendors and suppliers are planning to develop additional housing facilities for their employees in various locations through a public-private partnership model. Most of these units are being constructed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), with the Tata Group and SPR India also contributing to the development of worker accommodations.
As Apple continues to expand its footprint in India, the company’s initiatives are poised to not only boost local employment but also cement India’s status as a key player in the global technology manufacturing sector.
