STEMpowerment: How Women in Tech Are Succeeding at Wells Fargo

Progress for women in technology begins with steady, everyday effort. At Wells Fargo, this means creating systems that support, listen, and evolve. Change does not arrive through big promises. It grows through small, deliberate steps that make a workplace more fair and inclusive.

The Women in Technology (WiT) Group reflects this approach. It offers mentorship, learning opportunities, and space for real conversations. Flexible work options, return-to-work programmes, and access to development tools help women stay in tech and build long-term careers. These efforts may not be loud, but they matter.

Voices from within the organisation show how this ecosystem works in practice. Women speak of mentors who listen without judgement, networks that offer strength, and managers who value skill over style. These stories do not chase applause. They show what happens when intention meets action, and when inclusion becomes habit, not headline.

Eminent women from the organisation’s technology teams, each with distinct journeys, share how this ecosystem has helped them grow, lead, and give back.

Ink Dive: Her Voice in STEM: Here are The Bold Truths Behind Women’s Success in Tech

To the Forefront of Leadership

Women in leadership roles across STEM are a vital and influential part of Wells Fargo. Bridget Engle, Global Head of Technology; Ashley Regner, Chief Data Officer; and Tracy Kerrins, Head of Enterprise Generative AI and Chief Information Officer, Consumer Technology, lead the Bank’s AI vision. They are guiding responsible innovation across products, including Auto, Credit Card, Payments, Home Lending, and Small Business.

Swetha Kasthurirangan, Managing Director, Credit Risk for India and the Philippines—who has built a distinguished career in Risk and Analytics following her education in computer science engineering—says:
“This year, two out of four Distinguished Engineers, globally, are Indian women. One is an individual contributor, and the other is a manager. This shows the company’s focus on expertise and impact, as well as the encouraging ecosystem that nurtures such capability. I am thrilled at this milestone, as I strongly believe that women in leadership positions serve as role models to all, particularly encouraging women to take up greater roles and responsibilities.”

Among them is Parul Ghosh, an award-winning inventor and holder of several patents. She observes:
“This speaks volumes about the ecosystem at Wells Fargo that provides fair opportunities to everyone, and measures success by alignment with role expectations and the impact created.”

Mentorship and Networks that Accelerate Progress

The presence of the right mentors and a reliable professional network plays a pivotal role in propelling women forward in technology. Swetha Kasthurirangan notes:
"In practice, mentorship from experienced women who may have faced similar situations and challenges at work can make it easier for younger women to be heard and understood. Finding the right support network and investing the time to build on it has helped me personally through my career. I equally feel the need to give back to the community through mentoring and sponsorship."

Wells Fargo offers access to mentoring platforms and networking forums such as Sit With Me, where women can engage with peers and leaders. The Women in Technology (WiT) Group further strengthens career development through focused guidance and shared learning. Shruti Mathur, a technology leader at Wells Fargo, reflects on the value this has brought to her journey:

"The WiT Group at Wells Fargo offers targeted training workshops and courses designed to enhance technical skills and leadership abilities. Through this program, I had the opportunity to learn from industry leaders and gained expertise in areas that are critical to my career growth. Industry conferences and seminars have been a great platform for learning about the latest industry trends, gaining new skills, and listening to inspiring women leaders."

Parul Ghosh, an active contributor to WiT, adds:
“The opportunity to collaborate on great ideas and translate them into value for the organisation” is what excites her most. “I’m also eager to bring in fresh and creative thoughts, collaborate across teams, tap into India’s vast potential, and showcase its innovation on a global scale,” she says.

Learning, Evolving, Thriving

In a constantly evolving sector such as STEM, continuous learning is not optional but essential. Wells Fargo enables employees to keep pace through access to technology-focused development hubs and self-paced learning modules. Regional leadership programmes such as BOLD offer international exposure, executive visibility, and career sponsorship.

Swetha Kasthurirangan stresses the importance of remaining current:
"While it is challenging to stay on top of changing technologies, I leverage multiple methods to keep myself current. These include listening to podcasts, reading journals, networking with SMEs in the industry, and also informal conversations with my team. In fact, there’s nothing to beat staying curious and learning from everyone, including Millennials and Gen Z."

Balancing Careers and Life Transitions

Understanding that career journeys are not always linear, Wells Fargo has introduced flexible policies to support diverse life choices. These include parental leave, adaptive work schedules, and structured re-entry programmes such as Glide Relaunch, which assists women in returning to work after a career break.

Shruti Mathur explains:
"Of these, I would like to mention the Glide Relaunch program that helps women returning from a career break to ease into the workforce again, through refresher training, mentorship, and flexible scheduling options. The flexible work arrangements along with comprehensive parental leave policies, on-site childcare facilities, and access to family support services, are a huge help in trying to balance professional and personal responsibilities."

With its commitment to inclusive policies, leadership pathways, and community-led growth, Wells Fargo is redefining what it means to empower women in STEM.
