The IT industry in India is transforming, with more women stepping into senior leadership roles than ever before. While men continue to dominate C-suite positions, focused efforts in mentorship, leadership development, and diversity initiatives are steadily narrowing the gender gap. According to a recent report by recruitment consulting firm Avsar, women now hold 23% of senior leadership roles in IT as of 2024, marking a significant rise from 18.7% in 2023.
This shift reflects an industry-wide recognition that diverse leadership drives innovation, performance, and strategic growth. The report highlights key executive roles shaping the IT sector, including Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Chief Data Officer (CDO), and the emerging Chief AI Officer (CAIO). These positions demand not only technical expertise but also a strong strategic vision to lead advancements in AI, cybersecurity, and data-driven decision-making.
Leadership Demand and Compensation Trends
The demand for top IT leadership talent is reflected in compensation trends:
- Chief Technology Officers (CTOs): ₹1.5 to ₹4.5 crore per annum
- Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs): ₹1 to ₹3 crore per annum
- Chief Data Officers (CDOs): ₹1.2 to ₹3.8 crore per annum
- Chief AI Officers (CAIOs): ₹1.5 to ₹3 crore per annum
These figures emphasise the increasing significance of these roles in shaping the future of the IT industry.

Emerging Leadership Hotspots
Bengaluru remains the top hub for IT leadership hiring, accounting for 48% of senior appointments, followed by Hyderabad (22%), Pune (20%), and Chennai (10%). Additionally, NCR (12%) and Mumbai (8%) are witnessing rising demand, especially in fintech and consulting firms.
The Future of IT Leadership
The leadership landscape in IT is evolving with hybrid roles like Chief Digital Officer, which blend technology and business strategy. Companies are also prioritising sustainable technology practices and diverse leadership to stay competitive in the digital era.
Navneet Singh, Founder and CEO of Avsar, emphasised that the increasing presence of women in senior leadership is a positive shift toward a more inclusive IT sector.
He stated, "The surge in women holding top leadership positions signals a broader acceptance that diverse perspectives are essential for driving business success. Companies must continue breaking barriers, investing in leadership development, and fostering inclusive work cultures to sustain this momentum."
Avsar studied 150 IT companies to provide a comprehensive view of the IT sector’s evolving leadership landscape and its implications for the industry’s future.
