Upskilling in AI, ML, and Data Science Boosts Career Growth for 80% of Professionals

Great Learning, a global frontrunner in higher education and professional development, has unveiled its Career Progression Report 2024-25, offering profound insights into how upskilling in emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Data Science significantly impacts long-term career success. Based on a comprehensive survey of 1,000 alumni from the institution’s AI, ML, and Data Science programs, the report explores the diverse ways professionals at all career stages, from newcomers to senior leaders, have leveraged continuous learning to secure leadership roles, salary hikes, and improved job prospects.

A Transformative Shift: 4 in 5 Experience Career Advancements Post Upskilling

The report underscores the substantial career benefits of upskilling, with 4 out of 5 or 80% of respondents reporting positive career outcomes. These include promotions, salary increases, or successful transitions into new roles following their engagement with AI, ML, and Data Science programs. Over a short-term period of just two years post upskilling, 74% of professionals either received a promotion or had transitioned into new roles. Of those, 69% moved into new positions, either within their current organisation or with a new employer, while 31% reported considerable improvements within their existing roles.

The impact of upskilling becomes especially evident in the career trajectories of many professionals, with 2 in 3 climbing the corporate ladder after completing their training. Notably, the proportion of professionals in leadership roles has doubled, while those in team management positions have increased by 80%. This surge indicates that AI, ML, and Data Science competencies are equipping professionals with the necessary skills to transition into managerial and strategic leadership roles, empowering them to steer teams in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

For many professionals, the financial benefits of upskilling are equally compelling. The report reveals that upskilling leads to an average salary increase of 65%. Early-career professionals (0-3 years of experience) have seen an impressive 139% increase in their earnings, while mid-career professionals (3-8 years) have experienced a 93% rise. Even for more seasoned professionals (8-12 years), the increase remains notable at 50%, with those in senior roles (12+ years) seeing an average hike of 41%.

A Shift in Motivations: Career Security Takes Precedence Over Salary Increases

Career transition emerges as the most prominent driver of upskilling, with 60% of professionals pursuing further education to either shift into new roles or ensure their continued relevance in an increasingly disrupted job market. Among those, 65% are early- to mid-career professionals using upskilling as a strategic step for better career outcomes. While 22% of professionals are motivated by personal interest in domains like Data Science and AI, only 13% are primarily driven by the prospect of increased salaries. This indicates a marked shift in mindset, with a clear preference for long-term career security over short-term financial gains.

Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-Founder of Great Learning, commented on the findings: “Upskilling is a powerful tool for creating impactful career milestones and is no longer an alternative. It has enabled professionals to switch careers, step into leadership roles, and experience financial rewards through career growth. The true benefit of upskilling compounds over time, turning individuals into industry leaders.”

He further added, “Professionals who have invested in upskilling in recent years are poised to reap the most rewards as hiring activity picks up. As organisations continue to embrace AI across their operations, those equipped with up-to-date skills will be in high demand. The report underscores why upskilling should be viewed not just as a choice but as a lifelong strategy for success.”

Upskilling’s Long-Term Benefits: Practical Application and Enhanced Confidence

The report also highlights that the benefits of upskilling are not just theoretical; 72% of alumni are actively applying their newly acquired skills in their current roles. Beyond technical proficiency, 82% of professionals reported a boost in confidence when navigating the evolving job market. As businesses increasingly prioritise digital transformation, those who upskilled a few years ago are now reaping the rewards, positioning themselves as indispensable assets in a highly competitive job market.
