India has emerged as a global leader in AI adoption, with 46 per cent of knowledge workers in the country identified as advanced users of artificial intelligence, according to the AI Collaboration Index published by Atlassian. The findings significantly outpace adoption rates in countries such as the United States (34 per cent), Germany (32 per cent), France (26 per cent), and Australia (23 per cent).
The study, commissioned by Atlassian’s Teamwork Lab, surveyed 5,000 knowledge workers across five countries. It categorises AI usage into four stages, ranging from basic tool adoption to advanced integration as a strategic partner and decision-making advisor.
Key Findings in India:
- Productivity Gains:
Even at the introductory stages of AI adoption, Indian workers report significant productivity boosts. Basic AI users save an average of 104 minutes daily—more than double the global average of 45 minutes. Advanced AI users save up to 127 minutes per day, equating to over an additional workday each week. - Enhanced Work Quality:
Advanced AI users (stages 3 and 4) report both faster task completion and improved work outcomes. Nearly 96 per cent of respondents in this group acknowledged a noticeable enhancement in the quality of their output when collaborating with AI. - Leadership’s Influence:
Organisational leadership has been pivotal in fostering AI innovation. Among advanced users, 87 per cent attributed their growth in AI expertise to leadership support, citing environments that promote experimentation and reduce the fear of failure. - High AI Maturity Payoff:
Among Indian knowledge workers at higher levels of AI integration, 92 per cent believe the time invested in mastering AI has delivered substantial returns, showcasing the strategic value of prioritising AI maturity.
Expert Insights
Jamil Valliani, Atlassian’s Head of Product (AI), highlighted the importance of creating an experimental mindset within organisations:
“To unlock the full potential of AI, it is not enough for companies to simply deploy AI tools. They also need to give their employees room to experiment. At Atlassian, we have provided AI tools and LLMs in a secure environment to enable this. Employees have been able to use these building blocks to create AI solutions tailored to their team’s needs, accelerating adoption. All that is needed is a little time and willingness to experiment. Teams should feel encouraged and empowered to integrate AI as a strategic partner in their work.”
Shifting Mindsets for Transformation
The report underscores a need for organisations to embrace AI as a collaborative teammate rather than a standalone tool. By fostering this mindset, Indian organisations stand to unlock AI’s full potential, driving innovation and productivity.
