Microsoft Implements Performance-Based Terminations—No Severance Pay, Healthcare

According to reports a wave of job terminations has been initiated by Microsoft based on employee performance, with affected individuals receiving immediate termination notices for failing to meet the company's established job performance standards. As per a recent report by Business Insider, the employees dismissed under these conditions will not receive severance packages and will be stripped of their job responsibilities with immediate effect.

The termination letters, which were reviewed by Business Insider, inform the affected employees that they have been let go because their "job performance has not met minimum performance standards and expectations for your position." The employees in question have been told their employment is terminated immediately, with no opportunity for compensation or further work. Furthermore, the letters explicitly state that the individuals' access to Microsoft systems, accounts, and buildings will be revoked immediately, and they are no longer permitted to perform any work on behalf of the company.

In a significant shift, the affected workers will also lose their healthcare, dental, and prescription benefits on their last day of employment, with the company providing no continuation of these essential services. The letters also notify employees that, should they wish to apply for future roles within Microsoft, their previous performance and the reason for their termination will be taken into account, which could hinder their chances of rejoining the company.

"The reason(s) for the termination of your employment include your job performance has not met minimum performance standards and expectations for your position," the letters read. "You are relieved of all job duties effective immediately and your access to Microsoft systems, accounts, and buildings will be removed effective today. You are not to perform any further work on behalf of Microsoft."

The company's actions have raised questions about its approach to performance management, with some speculating that Microsoft is adopting a stricter stance akin to its competitors. Managers at Microsoft have reportedly spent the past several months evaluating employee performance across various levels, with the most senior roles also under scrutiny.

A Microsoft spokesperson defended the company's policy, stating, "At Microsoft, we focus on high-performance talent. We are always working on helping people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take the appropriate action."

Microsoft has also recently begun to implement job cuts across various departments, including security, experiences and devices, sales, and gaming. Despite these reductions, a Microsoft spokesperson clarified that the current performance-based terminations were separate from the broader layoffs, which have been occurring in parallel. At the close of June, Microsoft employed around 228,000 full-time staff members.

In this evolving situation, the tech giant's commitment to maintaining a high-performance workforce is clear, but how this strategy will impact employee morale and future hiring efforts remains to be seen.
