For most Indians, family isn’t just important, it is everything. Family values shape who we are, how we respond to life’s challenges, and even how we show up at work. In such a culturally rooted landscape, wellness programs that cater only to employees may miss the mark.
At Availity India, a healthtech GCC (Global Capability Centre), the leadership team is reimagining mental health and well-being by embracing a more holistic, family-first approach. All Things Talent spoke with Vybhava Srinivasan, Managing Director of Availity India, to explore the rationale and impact of extending Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits to the real support system, the family members of their employees.
The Ripple Effect: Supporting the Ecosystem Around the Employee
Q: Mental health challenges often spill over from personal life to professional life and vice versa. How do you see the ‘ripple effect’ of supporting an employee’s immediate ecosystem playing out in a corporate setting?
Great question! When companies invest in the well-being of an employee’s close circle, it has a big, positive impact, creating a ripple effect that leads to healthier and happier associates, stronger teams, and ultimately, a more resilient organisation. A person’s personal and professional lives are not compartmentalised—in fact, they are often deeply intertwined.
At Availity, we recognise the importance of “helping the surrounding family, thereby the ecosystem,” to create a truly supportive environment. We have introduced a comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that provides free access to counselling and self-help resources—not just for employees, but also for their adult family members.
It is a part of our commitment to building emotional resilience across every layer of an employee’s life. When organisations embrace this kind of holistic approach, it naturally cultivates a culture of empathy and openness.
Mental Health Support That Includes Families
Q: In your experience, how does extending mental health resources to an employee's family translate into tangible benefits for the employee’s overall well-being and performance at work?
A person leading a happy personal life leads to a fulfilled and productive professional life. Therefore, it is imperative for organisations today to look beyond professional well-being. Supporting an associate’s immediate family can significantly reduce stressors that often distract or burden our associates. Providing access to family counselling or childcare services can help ease anxiety, while flexible work arrangements enable employees to better manage personal obligations. This, in turn, fosters a more focused, engaged, and productive workforce. At Availity, this belief is central to our approach. Our EAP extends beyond employees to include adult family members, offering access to professional counselling, assessment tools, and self-help resources. It’s our way of ensuring that support doesn’t stop at the workplace.
Flexible work arrangements, coupled with access to family-inclusive EAP services, ensure our associates are not overwhelmed. The result? A workforce that’s focused, engaged, and productive. It’s a foundational belief at Availity: support doesn’t stop at the office door.
Pitching Family Well-being to the Business
Q: From a leadership perspective, how do you advocate for the business case of investing in family well-being to stakeholders who may see it as ‘beyond the company’s scope’?
Honestly, it’s not just a compassionate initiative—it’s good business sense. When employees feel supported on all fronts, their loyalty deepens. Reduced stress leads to sharper focus and higher productivity. It also helps contain attrition and boosts emotional commitment to the company. Investing in family wellness is a long-term value creator.
Culture Matters: Understanding the Indian Context
Q: Given India’s deeply family-centric culture, how important is it for organisations to recognise the interdependence between employee well-being and family dynamics?
In India, family is often the cornerstone of an individual’s life, influencing their values, decisions, and emotional health. Employees donot separate their work and family lives; they are intertwined in ways that profoundly affect their overall well-being and performance.
Today’s workforce increasingly values employers who offer more than just a paycheck—they seek workplaces with a culture that understands their life circumstances and contributes to their overall happiness. Seeing the connection between family and employee well-being isn’t just a nice extra. It is a must for Indian companies that want to build a motivated, loyal, and high-performing team that can keep growing strong.
Are Indian Companies Doing Enough?
Q: Do you believe Indian companies are doing enough to address family well-being as part of their mental health strategies? Where do you see gaps or opportunities for improvement?
The post-pandemic era has taught Indian companies the importance of mental health and family well-being, but there is still a lot that can be done. Employers have a great chance to make an even bigger difference by expanding their support to include things like parenting workshops and elder care help.
It is also important to create safe spaces where people can talk openly without fear or judgement, and to run awareness campaigns that break down stigma. Also, these programs should be flexible enough to fit the different family setups and cultural backgrounds across India.
Designing Globally, Thinking Locally
Q: What cultural nuances should global organisations be mindful of when designing family support programs for their Indian workforce?
To create family support programs that really work for Indian employees, global companies need to keep a few things in mind.
They (global companies) should recognise that families often include more than just parents and kids, and that people in India tend to make decisions together as a family. It is important to respect traditional roles, like how caregiving is often handled, and be aware of the country’s wide range of cultures and beliefs.
Also, since mental health can still be a sensitive topic, programs should be designed carefully. I think when companies take these cultural details into account, they show real support and help employees feel more connected and engaged.
