Women Setting New Benchmarks in Skills Training: More Women Saying ‘Yes’ to Upskilling Than Men

In recent years, a remarkable trend has emerged in India's workforce dynamics – women are taking charge of their professional development like never before. The landscape of skills training, once predominantly occupied by men, is now witnessing a significant shift, with women outnumbering men in various upskilling initiatives across the country. This shift not only highlights women's growing participation in the workforce but also underscores their determination to overcome barriers and excel in diverse sectors of the economy.

Employability Versus Participation Quandary

Despite being highly qualified and skilled, many women are sitting on the sidelines when it comes to the workforce. It's like having all the ingredients for a delicious dish but hesitating to enter the kitchen. Let's dive into some numbers to understand the situation better.

According to the India Skills Report 2023, the percentage of employable women has risen to an impressive 52.8 percent, surpassing that of men. However, the ground reality paints a different picture – only 37% of women are actively participating in the workforce. This discrepancy between employability and participation is evident, highlighting the challenges women face in translating their skills into meaningful employment.

In bustling cities like Delhi and Bengaluru, where talent abounds, many qualified women are struggling to land their dream jobs. A survey conducted in these urban areas revealed that three out of every five women expressed a lack of confidence in their skills, while half admitted to feeling underprepared for job interviews. Despite being highly qualified and skilled, women often find themselves on the sidelines of the workforce, unable to fully leverage their potential.

More Women Saying ‘Yes’ to Upskilling Than Men

Amidst these challenges, upskilling initiatives have emerged as a beacon of hope for women across the country. One such initiative is the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2023. Since its inception, the program has provided training to 350,000 individuals, with women surpassing men in participation. Of the total beneficiaries, 240,000 (68.76 percent) are women, while 110,000 (31.3 percent) are men.

What's even more remarkable is the choice of trades among women participants. Over 95 percent of women enrolled in the program have opted for tailoring as their preferred trade. In fact, of the women participants, 230,000 gained expertise in tailoring, showcasing their enthusiasm for mastering traditional crafts and skills.

Seizing Opportunities Step by Step

Women aren't just taking baby steps; they're leaping forward with boundless enthusiasm. Whether it's pursuing higher education or grabbing every chance to upskill, they're leaving no stone unturned. And guess what? They're not alone in this journey. The enthusiasm among women to upskill and pursue new opportunities is palpable.

In a study conducted in 20 Indian tier-I and tier-II cities, approximately 87% of female professionals expressed a keen interest in upskilling, particularly in emerging technologies. This eagerness to learn extends beyond the corporate sector – government-led initiatives like the Jan Shikshan Sansthan have witnessed significant participation from women, with 81% of the 13.8 lakh non-literate and neo-literate beneficiaries being women.

Mentorship plays a crucial role in guiding women on their upskilling journey. A good mentor provides personalized guidance, helps navigate challenges, and fosters a culture of continuous learning. With the support of mentors, women can overcome self-doubt, explore new career paths, and unlock their full potential.

Home and Work Across Gender Lines

Balancing work and home life is another challenge women often face. Flexible work arrangements, parental leave policies, and supportive workplace cultures are essential in enabling women to thrive in both professional and personal spheres.

Mentorship Can Contribute To:
