Young Indians are increasingly considering job changes, with approximately 34% of Gen Z professionals and 32% of millennials expressing intentions to depart from their current positions, as per LinkedIn's most recent findings. Sourabh Agrawal, Senior VP at Lupin, notes that the allure of fresh prospects, aspirations for personal development, and the quest for job satisfaction are primary drivers for this trend.
In light of this trend, companies are urged to adapt to the preferences of these modern professionals to effectively retain talent. Priorities among the younger workforce include an emphasis on mental well-being, a push for equality, and a focus on organisational values and culture. Terms like "Rage applying" and "Bare Minimum Monday" are emerging alongside a desire for career advancement and flexibility in work arrangements.
Recognition and a supportive work environment are highlighted as key factors by professionals like Eklavya Monga, a Business Analyst at EXL, who also stresses the importance of maintaining work-life balance. Jerry Jose, Digital Marketing Lead at ZS, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of organisational culture, clearly defined roles, and location flexibility.
Agrawal attributes these evolving expectations to increased awareness, ongoing skill development, and a shift towards meaningful work rather than merely climbing the corporate ladder. He notes that digitalisation has expanded opportunities globally, normalising the practice of job hopping as a means of personal growth and career advancement.
LinkedIn's data also indicates that a considerable portion of Gen Z (30%) and millennials (28%) aspire to progress within their current organisations.
To retain talent effectively, businesses must foster an environment conducive to innovation and transparency. They should prioritise work-life balance by providing flexible arrangements. Clear pathways for career advancement should be established, accompanied by robust support mechanisms and internal growth prospects. Furthermore, aligning with social and environmental causes, offering volunteering opportunities, and ensuring equitable compensation packages are vital steps in retaining top talent.
